Like nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA), the addition of vitamin C and vitamin E (3 mg/1) in the rooting medium could control, through less effectively senescence of regenerated shoots of Corchorus olitorius. In the regenerating medium the addition of NDGA and vitamin C in combination was found to be highly effective in controlling senescence of the regenerating shoots and in obtaining maximum number of transferable shoots (9 shoots/explant). When the regenerating medium was supplemented with NDGA, vitamin C and vitamin E alone or NDGA plus vitamin E in combination could also control senescence but was less effective. The regenerated shoots grew normally when transferred to the antioxidant-omitted rooting medium.
