The addition to MS-based medium of 0.1 or 0.5% (w/v) of either commercial grade Pluronic F-68 or a purified fraction obtained by passage through silica gel, stimulated shoot production from petioles of cotyledons of Corchorus capsularis (Jute) vars. D154 and C134. This effect was pronounced with C134, because of the failure of control cotyledons to differentiate into shoots in MS medium without Pluronic. The implications of these results are discussed in relation to the potential value of non-ionic surfactants as additives to plant culture media for stimulating growth and differentiation.
