Four improved media (Z1, Z2, Z3 and P3) and two original (B5 and P1) media were studied for their efficiency in callus induction from anthers of indica rice. Callus induction efficiency in Z2 was higher than that of either B5 or Z1, respectively. There was also a differential response of cultivars suggesting variable requirement of media components for different varieties. Liquid cultures of some of these media were more efficient in callus induction of rice anthers than were the semi-solid culture of the same media. Liquid Z1 produced a mean of 1.24 calli/anther compared to 0.29 calli/anther in B5 and 0.74 calli/anther in Z3. The results suggest that Z2, Z3 and P3 media could be used for efficient callus induction of indica varieties of rice.
