Best response towards multiple shoot regeneration was obtained from the nodal segments of Catharanthus roseus on MS supplemented with 1.5 mg/l BAP + 0.2 mg/l NAA. In this combination nodal segments produced 20 - 24 initial shoot buds whereas shoot tip produced only 12 - 16 shoot buds. Regenerated multiple shoots did not produce roots. Among the three auxins (IAA, NAA and IBA) tried for root induction, half strength MS containing 0.2 mg/l IBA was found to be effective in the production of roots. About 90% of the regenerated plantlets survived in the field condition.
