Shoot tip from two banana (Musa sp.) cultivars were evaluated for in vitro multiplication. Both solid and liquid media were tested. It was noted that the response of shoot tips on a specific medium was genotype dependent. Maximum multiplication was achieved on MS liquid medium containing 4.0 mg/1 BAP in both the cultivars tested. Shoots were detached from clusters of multiple shoots and were rooted on half strength MS medium containing 1.0 mg/1 IBA. However, local cultivars showed a higher rate of multiplication.
