The genus Bauhinia (Caesalpiniaceae), commonly known as ?kanchan?, is valuable for its ornamental and medicinal properties. Leaf apices and leaf bases in the seven Bauhinia species were very responsive in most of the species worked out for the induction of callus and subsequent regeneration of plantlets in modified MS medium supplemented with various growth regulators, namely, 2,4-D, NAA and BAP at different concentrations. Shoot bud developed from excised root derived calli. They showed morphogenic responses under different cultural conditions. Somatic embryoids were also found in calli of the leaf explants of some species of Bauhinia.
