In Abelmoschus esculentus plant regeneration was achieved from hypocotyls explants via direct and indirect organogenesis depending on the ratio of cytokinin and auxin. MS medium when supplemented with 1-3 mg/1 benzyladenin (BA) and 0.1-0.3 mg/1 a-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA) induced direct shoot organogenesis whereas the medium containing 0.1-0.3 mg/1 BA and 1-3 mg/1 NAA supported callus growth without shoot formation. The callus when subcultured on to the medium containing 1 mg/1 BA and without auxin shoot regeneration was achieved. Complete plantlets were obtained upon transfer of the regenerated shoots on the MS medium with 0.1 mg/1 indole-3-butyric acid (IBA).
