Anthers of eight rice varieties were studied for induction of callus and plant regeneration. Chaleff?s R2 medium supplemented with 2.0 mg/1 NAA + 0.3 mg/1 kinetin was used for callus induction. All the varieties except Iratom-24 production calli which ranged from 0.86 to 2.10%. For differentiation of anther derived callus R2 medium was supplemented with 0.3 mg/1 IAA + 1.0 mg/1 kinetin. Callus of BR3 produced only green plants while IR8, IR36 and Pajam produced both green and albino plants and the remaining three varieties produced only albinos. The number of albino plants was higher than that of green plants.
