Somatic embryogenesis and subsequent plantlet regeneration were achieved in callus cultures from immature zygotic embryos of Muntingia calabura L. using MS semi-soild basal medium (Murashige and Skoog 1962) supplemented with different concentrations of auxins and cytokinins alone or in combinations Kn (11.6 μM) along with 2, 4-D (4.5 μM) produced the maximum number of somatic embryos per culture. Among the different carbohydrates used in the basal medium, sucrose showed the best response to the induction of somatic embryogenesis in Muntingia. The development of somatic embryos into plantlets was achieved on half-strength MS supplemented with 2% (w/v) sucrose devoid of growth regulators.
