Since a large number of plants can be regenerated from root cultures, the introduction of foreign genes through Agrobacterium rhizogenes mediated transformation has expanded the scope of plant genetic manipulation (Fraley et al. 1985). Further, infection with A. rhizogenes dose not interfere with the regeneration ability of transformed tissue (David et al. 1984). Using Agrobactarium tumefaciens genetic transformation of chickpea has been made earlier (Srinivasan et al. 1988; Riazuddin et al. 1988). However, no reports on A. rhizogenes strain causing transformation in chickpea is available. Therefore, a preliminary study of the transformation ability of an A. rhizogenes strain on chickpea was conducted with the aim of developing Ri plasmid-based vectors for transformation of chickpea plants.
