To characterize indigenous potato varieties of Bangladesh by random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis, four primers were used. Primer 131, one of the four primers used in this study, discriminated ten out of twelve potato varieties. Moreover, all the twelve varieties could be identified by the four primers. When similarity index (SI) was calculated based on the presence or absence of specific RAPD markers among the varieties, all the indigenous potato varieties of Bangladesh could be grouped into three or four categories. Shil Bilati and Hagrai were in one group. Ausha formed a separate group by itself. Patnai, Festa Shil, Sada Gutti, Dohazari were probably in one group and, Challisha, Lal Shil, Lal Pakri in another. The third possibility was that varieties of these two groups constitute one large group.
