Singh (1976) for the first time cultured Aegle marmelos, but failed to regenerate plants from nucellar tissues. Arya et al. (1981) described callus formation and some organogenesis from cotyledon and hypocotyl cultures. Regeneration of multiple shoots through organogenesis was achieved from seedling leaves (Islam et al. 1993), nucellus tissue (Hossain et al. 1994) and stem (Varghese et al. 1993). Recently Islam et al. (1995) reported that shoots were obtained from immature and mature embryo axes callus cultures. This paper describes a method for rapid multiplication of Aegle marmelos from callus cultures derived from immature leaflets of in vitro grown seedlings.
